Girls (and Moms) Just Want To Have Fun!

Happy Mother’s Day! This weekend was filled with three days of laser tag that ended with a game played with my teammate for life, my mom!

Friday night there was a massive group fundraiser (a three-wristband kind of night) for a local school group and it took me all of about three seconds to meet the organizer and recognize that she is Alex’s mom based on nothing but the family resemblance. So in a way it was a weekend for moms from the get go!
Saturday I had to hightail it from a work assignment nearly three hours away, where I was broadcasting out in the rain, but at least I got to use my new microphone, lol!

With a quick change clothes I was off to a church in Baldwinsville, just in time to see my Goddaughter’s first communion. Miraculously, I made it! She is as close to being a mother as I get (save for being a gecko mom) so I was really pleased to be able to be there to attend this special mass with her. And since I was already right near Syracuse, of course I showed up for laser tag…still wearing my dress and heels as I came right from the celebration!
Now, by virtue of the fact that I am rather conspicuous and stand out from the group of players on a regular night, you can imagine I was a special target when I jumped into a game dressed like this.

But girls just want to have fun and, truth be told, it wasn’t my first time tagging in a dress (or other unconventional outfit). I kind of enjoyed knowing that somewhere out there a big, burly guy would be going home telling his wife “yeah, I got beat at laser tag by a girl wearing a dress”. I do love to break stereotypes!

I went home early on Saturday, knowing that I’d be getting up early the next morning to celebrate Mother’s Day with my mom by taking her to brunch and a movie. What was really cool about this event was that both were happening simultaneously and we actually went to a buffet right inside the movie theater, with the food set up under the screen!

It was a special showing of Mamma Mia and we enjoyed popcorn and brunch during the movie, right from the comfort of our reclining theater seats. I have to shout out Marcus Theatres who were doing these special Mother’s Day events all across the country. If you have an opportunity, we both highly recommend this experience!

And for the third day in a row I found myself right near the laser tag arena so I asked my mother if she would like to play and, sure enough, she was up for it! My mom has only played laser tag once before, about ten years ago in Albany on a different system, so this was essentially a brand new experience for her.
On a gorgeous weather Sunday (and a holiday, no less) I knew it was likely we would get time in the arena with just us playing, which was perfect for being able to show her how it works. Beanz gave her a thorough briefing of the gear and we walked the arena first, pointing out bases and targets. She caught on quickly!
She enjoyed tagging the bases.

I had requested a game of Escalation so she would have something more than just me to target…although I think she enjoyed tagging me even more!

I also told her the story behind the Tivia avatar, which she didn’t know about. It was nice to be able to show her what laser tag is all about and mom really enjoyed her Mother’s Day experience. Because girls (and moms) just want to have fun! :)
