Midwestern Maui’s

The reason I traveled to Kentucky was because I heard of a brand new arena, just recently opened in Owensboro. I was intrigued to check out Maui’s Indoor Theme Park. This was a Malibu Jack’s project, but rebranded with a new name and a fresh look. This was the main catalyst for planning my trip to Kentucky and it made a big first impression!

It was while I was waiting out a game and smiling for this photo under the laser tag entrance that I heard a voice call out to me, “Hey, Laser Tag Lady!”

Would you believe it was Doug Wilson of Art Attack who coincidentally just happened to be checking out his team’s design work on the arena at the very same time I was passing through? It really is a small world! We went into the arena together to take some pics before I jumped into the next game.

This arena is very blacklight reactive and looks amazing in person. It’s another example of photos not doing it true justice. However, you can definitely see some of the cool elements, like this memorable giant egg that serves as a centerpiece for the arena built around it.

The Delta Strike hex bases are surrounded by shaped, stylistic housings that are a bit more elaborately developed. I love to see something that is not only creative and sculpted, like this housing protected by a giant bird…

…or this one this one that immerses you among the blooms of a very unique garden!

This arena has a LOT of walls, but and with a nice, full game there are plenty of corners to tuck behind. The sight lines from the bridges on each side of the arena are partial, so there is no apparent straight shot from one side to the other. As such, it’s an interesting build to play through.

And I am starting to recognize a few new designer hallmarks.

The briefing room reflects a bit more of a space theme, so I presume the “storyline” is that the arena is a whole other planet.

And while you might be looking for odd creatures or alien beings, let me assure you, this is no alien…it’s a pickle (for my Plausibles)!

After the game I took a walk around the rest of the center and saw more amazing theming around the various other attractions, from the go-karts to the bowling and all throughout the entranceway.

Maui’s in Owensboro was a delightful experience, particularly considering the surprise encounter, and I am so glad I noticed the positive review online that led me to make this journey back to western Kentucky.
