Roll With It (aka This Is NOT Bhodi Li)

This is NOT Bhodi Li.

However, this is a wonderful example of what it looks like to roll with unexpected changes and still find yourself having an awesome adventure.

So here’s what happened and how I decided to just roll with it. When I left the house on Friday morning I absolutely expected to be tagging in Delaware with Randall (aka my friend the real life Bhodi Li), but life had other plans for me. I had started my day around 2:00 am with plans to catch a flight to DC, then drive to Delaware to laser tag with Bhodi Li at a local event to pick up that tiny little state that I still need to check off for my third time around. I had additional plans for the rest of the weekend in West Virginia and Pittsburgh as well. However, my flight got delayed twice due to some unavoidable issues that prompted a lot of people to reschedule plans and by the time we were over five hours behind schedule I had gotten the call…thunderstorms in Delaware had cancelled the event I was in the middle of trying to get to.

Well, no longer any need to stick to my original itinerary now. Rather than lament that the weekend was not working out the way I had planned, instead I remembered there was a 90s convention happening this same night only a few hours away. So I pulled myself off that Friday flight, reworked my tag plans for the following day and hopped in my car to spontaneously drive to Connecticut. That’s where I found more unexpected laser taggers and an awesome adventure I never saw coming!

So, no, that is not Bhodi Li. That’s me striking the laser tag pose with Rob Estes, who most people probably recognize from Melrose Place, but who I remember from way further back when he was on the detective show Silk Stalkings with Mitzi Capture. It turns out he has played laser tag with his son, so I am delighted to add him to the unexpected laser tag players list. I regret not asking him where they played, because when I later met Rachel Leigh Cook (Josie!) I asked her and she name dropped Ultrazone in Sherman Oaks.

Another celebrity laser tagger! Love it! And I have had more celeb players specifically reference the arena at Sherman Oaks more frequently than any other arena. It’s definitely one of the best in the Los Angeles area, so that’s not all that surprising.

Just a couple more pics to share from my unexpected detour to Connecticut. I struck a laser tag pose with Balki and Cousin Larry (aka Bronson Pinchot and Mark Linn Baker from Perfect Strangers), although they both looked a bit perplexed as to why…seemingly not laser taggers. ;)

However, it was still an absolute delight to meet these guys as they marked the 40th anniversary year of Perfect Strangers (back when TGIF = appointment television). Plus, when I was in high school I saw Mark Linn Baker on stage in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way To the Forum and was glad to have a chance to tell him what an impact that had on me.

And in spite of recent news, I offered a few words of kindness to Selma Blair who appeared visibly moved. She hugged me three times…a reminder that no matter what (and as a frequent air traveler I am NOT justifying anything), kindness always matters.

It’s surreal to think that I had no plans for any of this when I started my day. My travel life is SO bizarre! When I left this event I drove over three hours home and got two and a half hours sleep before waking up the next day, once again at 2:00 am, in order to return to the airport to regroup and pivot my plans for the next day. From here the weekend got back on track for my laser tag plans, which would keep me busy right through Sunday morning. But that’s another story with even more opportunities to just roll with it!
